A Netbook For College?

May 30th, 2009

Would a netbook, something like the asus or msi wind, be suitable for college or should I buy a notebook instead.
My major is undecided and the laptop I use now i use for browsing the web. I do my hw at the library instead of using my laptop.

    I would recommend a notebook.
I have owned laptops for a long time, since the early 90s. Two ways to extend it’s “usable life, upgrade memory and disk space.
I have owned Toshibas, HPs, IBM and other models.
I like the HPs. You should be able to pick up a new one between $600 – $700. 3G, 250G+ Drive, Dual Core CPU (Intel or AMD). Intel you’ll pay a premium. (AMD works just fine).
With Christmas coming there will be a lot of sales. Don’t let the big retail outlets sell you their extended coverage (they don’t know how to repair anything, they usually send it off), it’s a waste of money. If you need repair during the warranty period, find a factory authorized repair shop (you can have your system back in days vs weeks). It you want to extend the warranty, get a manufacture’s warranty. The authorized repair shop can help you with that.
MACs, I know how to use them, but never owned one! Usually you’ll pay a premium for a MAC. (I’m neutral on this brand)
Also, don’t loan your laptop out, that’s the quickest way for things to go wrong. I use this analogy, I will not loan out my laptop just like I would not loan out my tooth brush!

The macbook has always been good for college students no matter
what’s your major or what you need to do with it.
