I saw this laptop on Craigslist for 50 bucks!!!
And since my Toshiba Satellite is as good as dead, instead of paying $100 to get a battery for that, I figured I’ll get a new laptop =)
The most important things are to be able to type and go on the Internet. Our school has Ethernet, and I have the cable, but will it work just fine with that?

NO STAY away, a laptop this old will have the same problem, the battery its going to be exausted already. y not try buying the battery on ebay, if your laptop its newer than the one on the link, its wort the battery. what laptop do you have now?
If the processor is a P 233 or greater and it has at least 64 meg of ram and a HDD large enough to support the XP files you will have a very slow computer. Why not load win 98SE instead?
you may be able to install windows xp if laptop meet the requirements

not worth it don’t waste your money, if there is a problem with the battery ,you can find battery on e-bay with reasable price.
No you will not be able to install XP on that laptop. I suggest you look for a better laptop, preferable something made in this decade.
