Is It Okay To Leave A Laptop Plugged In And On All The Time?

September 14th, 2009

I have an HP Pavilion Laptop, and usually turn it completely off at night. But for the past week or so, I have resorted to leaving it plugged in and completely on all the time (all night, all day). I changed the settings so the laptop doesn’t go to sleep/hibernate, but the screen does go black after 5 minutes. The reason I did this was because I wanted my AIM to stay on all night, so in the morning I could quickly check it/change my away message.
Is this okay for my laptop? The ventilation is not a problem, because it is sitting on my wooden desk. But will the battery life be affected? Am I better off just turning it off? My laptop is almost a year old, and I don’t want to kill it.
Thanks! :)

Has Hp’s Responses To Pavilion Dv1000 Power Outage Leave You Questioning Their Loyalty To Customers?

July 17th, 2009

I’ve had numerous occasions in which my HP Pavilion dv1000 has blacked out loosing all power. The first time the tech’s at Staples (where I purchased the laptop) where able to restore the power by fluke, but I sent it back to HP anyway because it was still under warranty. Since then the same problem has occurred at least 5 times. I have not sent it back to HP because it is out of warranty. On one occasion I took it to a local computer repair shop to see if they could fix it. (I am a college student and was tired of loosing precious hour of notes input into the computer because of these black outs.) He said he would not fix it and indicated that the problem stems from a poor design of having the power cord located in the back of the computer which most likely is causing damage internally when the computer is tilted. A few weeks ago I contacted HP through their online chat support to find out how much it would cost to fix. They said $300. My issue with this is that it is a reoccurring problem and I don’t think it is fair to ask the consumer to pay time and time again to fix a poorly designed power input problem that will never go away. The cost of a few repairs will rapidly exceed the cost of the computer. There is a warranty that covers the repair work, but it’s not long enough. I did find that if you remove the battery, plug in the power, and power un the laptop something happens that restores the power, although the black out will inevitably happen again. Has anyone else experience this problem and feel left hanging by HP?
