External Hard Drives. Do I Need One?

Hey heres my problem. My laptop keeps freezing. I have an Hp Pavilion with Vista on it. I cant even get past the start up. I cant even get into safe mode before it freezes. I had it look at and they said I need a new hard drive because of the battery. The battery aint worth ****. It dies in 40s. But I always keep it plugged in. So I would like to know if I could use an external hard drive until I can get another one or new computer all together? I guess Im trying to find out it is…is the external hard drive going to let me use my computer without any problems for a while?
If you’re wondering how Im using my computer now, its because I pull up some screen by hitting F11 and running disk check, which said pass and now Im defragmenting. Which for some reason allows me to use my computer for a few hours before it start freezing again.

Do I need a good graphics card for my laptop if I only play games like rollercoaster tycoon and sim city 4? I purchased a hp pavilion dv5-1235dx from Best Buy http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp;jsessionid=K4IZGOWHMFWGNKC4D3FVAHQ?skuId=9167652&type=product&id=1218041150023 or I can get a laptop with the same specs but it has a NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT. The other difference is the battery life on the one from best buy is great because its a 12 cell. ok i have a HP Pavilion Laptop. A few days ago, it was working just fine. Now the battery is dead, the only way i can use it is if i keep it plugged in. Every time i plug it in to charge it, It doesnt charge. At the bottom of the screen, i clicked on the little battery thing at it says, Plugged in, not charging. What is wrong? How do i get it to charge. Thanks.

I have vista on my HP Pavilion laptop…and i recently rebooted the comp and realized that the battery icon thingy on the bottom right corner said “0% available (plugged in, not charging)”.
and the weird thing is, my comp didnt hibernate…ALL THIS TIME!!!!!!!
is this a glitch or something????????? i dont know what to do to fix this.

I recently bought a new hp pavilion dv9000 laptop and found out that it wont charge. I tested the battery and the power cord and they are working fine. A guy from geek squad told me that i need a new motherboard, but before i go spend $200 on a new one, i would like some confirmation that a motherboard would solve my problem.
