Will A Dead Battery Prevent Some Laptops From Working Even If It’s Hooked Up To An Ac Adapter?

August 11th, 2009

I’ve worked on other laptops with dead batteries in them that are hooked up to an AC, but it appears as though my wife’s laptop (HP Pavilion DV4000) won’t work unless I take the dead battery out and then hook it up to the AC adapter. Why is it doing that? Shouldn’t it work as long as it’s hooked up to an AC regardless if there’s a dead battery in it or not, or is there something else that might be wrong? Also, we are using one of those aftermarket, one-size-fits-all laptop ac adapters because the factory one broke last year. One of my wife’s students told her that non-factory ac’s can overheat the computer and cause long term damage…is this true? Could it have contributed to the problem we are having now? Even when hooked up to the AC now, the screen keeps going between full-strength brightness and low-strength…What’s going on?

Can I Get Some Suggestions On What To Do For This Virus?

June 23rd, 2009

Computer Specs:
Windows XP: Service Pack 3
1Gb RAM
Model: Asus eeePC
Intel(R) Celeron(R) M Processor 900MHz
I recently contracted a virus on my computer. I first discovered I had a virus when I woke up to see “Spyware Protect 2009″ which I already knew was “Scare-ware”. So I did a scan with Norton, nothing came up. I restarted my computer. Upon restarting it, nothing worked. The desktop was like a picture, I could not do anything to or with it. So I booted in safe mode, and downloaded (on my other laptop) Microsoft’s “Malicious Software Removal Tool”. It found 1 threat. Then I booted Windows normally. Windows was now functional, but it was still blatantly obvious that I had a virus (and still do). My major problem/issue is that NO anti-spyware will open, install, or update. Especially Norton 360. Avast! wont even get through the first step of installation. PLEASE HELP ME! any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Can I Have Some Feedback On My Mock-up Press Release?

June 18th, 2009

Hi, I’ve been asked to do a mock up press release for a job interview. I have never done any and would like some feedback on what I have done. My product of choice is the Asus EeePC. it has to be between 100-150 words…
Laptop users can now purchase the Asus EeePC 900, an ultra portable laptop which comes with a larger screen and hard drive than its predecessor. The EeePC 900 is the second sub-laptop from Asus, it follows the successful 700 series which was developed for the One Laptop Per Child project.
The EeePC combines its lightweight and solid state hard drive with a relatively low cost due to its Linux based operating system, however customers can purchase the EeePC with Microsoft Windows XP. The Linux based operating system, Xandros is a simplified user interface aimed at novice computer users. It comes with OpenOffice, a free software package which rivals Microsoft Office.

Buying A New Hp Laptop – Need Some Advice Please?

June 17th, 2009

OK, so I’m buying a new laptop. With a generous academic discount, the model I’ve decided on is the HP Pavilion DV5T with a Core 2 Duo and Vista Home Premium (32 bit). I’ll be using this laptop mainly for Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, and web browsing. No games, or video encoding. The only encoding would be occasional mp3.
Here’s what I’m stuck on:
1. CPU – T5800 vs P7350. Both are 2ghz Core 2’s, but the difference is FSB speed and cache size. I’ve also read that the P7350 is a little better on battery life, but that may only be true under certain conditions. Are there any other differences between the two CPU’s, especially given what I’m using this for? Any other insight on these choices would be appreciated.
2. RAM – My inclination with 32-bit Vista is that 3GB would be best. But I read someone else’s post that buying 2GB+1GB “disables” dual-channel functionality because of the different module capacities. My experience years ago (and things may have changed) is that dual-channel performance is negligible vs non dual channel. For what I’m using this laptop for, I’m leaning towards more RAM vs dual-channel (if that’s even available with the above two CPU’s). Feedback please?
3. Shared vs Dedicated Video – again, I won’t be gaming or working with CAD, photo editing, etc. So, I’m leaning toward shared. Would I notice any difference in the apps I mentioned above by using a dedicated card? Also, If I got 4GB of RAM, that wouldn’t really enhance the shared situation under a 32-bit OS, correct? Or would it?
4. Wireless Card – to Intel, or not to Intel. That is the question. Does the Intel wireless perform better (speed, range, consistency, etc.) than the “generic” wireless G-card?
I’m grateful for any and all insight to all of the above (even if your answer is redundant to someone else’s). I guess the main things I’m doing is wondering if I should go with shared video and use the savings toward a faster CPU or not. I just don’t want to have intermittent missing blotches of images, etc by using a shared video setup. I’ve had this issue in the past but it’s been years.
